As a Cognos Analytics user, our partners at IBM have enhanced their BI solution with more added capabilities and features than any previous iteration of Cognos Analytics with their new Cognos 11.1.7 release. The update with performance improvements and the ability to access dashboards easily from your smartphone with the new Cognos mobile app has been overwhelmingly well-received by both clients and business partners. So, let’s take a look at what makes Cognos Analytics stand out from other BI solutions on the market.

What is Different about Cognos Analytics 11.1.7?

New Features

Email Capabilities

There have been a few new functionalities included in this version of Cognos Analytics, particularly regarding email capability.

Email capability allows a user to send an email when scheduling or sharing content. Additionally, four new secured functions are associated with the new Email capability:

  • Email Delivery Option
  • Including a link in an email
  • Share using email
  • Type in external email

The Attach Outputs capability allows a user to attach outputs in an email when setting a schedule, running a report in the background, or setting job steps.

Cloud Capabilities

The following three capabilities are available only to users of Cognos Analytics on Cloud On-Demand and Cognos Analytics on Cloud Hosted:

The existing Job capability was modified so that Report Administrators can now create jobs. For details, see the Job capability section of Initial access permissions for capabilities.

With this release, visualisations receive some new features and additional properties to help close that gap, for example:

  • Baselines
  • Schematics
  • Combination charts let you add in multiple values
  • Waterfall charts allow multiple inputs
  • Treemaps have four display modes: the standard Squarify plus SliceDice and Slice-Dice

You can change the value axis tick interval in some visualisations. With the option, Value axis minimum value you can set the minimum value of the value axis. With the option, Value axis maximum value you can set the maximum value of the value axis.

New Improvements

Improved Visualisation Reporting

AI-assisted dashboard and visualisation creation makes data exploration easier than ever, users at any expertise level can get the answers they need. This feature can empower more of your team members to use data and improve productivity in an instant using as few as two natural English phrases: “show data” and “generate dashboard”.

Dashboarding

The drop zones for visualisations no longer require you having to focus/expand, add or change them. This capability saves a bunch of time when working with multiple visualisations. While Conditional Formatting was added in a few releases ago, the ranges were static and fell apart as soon as you filtered your data. In this release, you can now use percentage-based thresholds, define custom colours and palettes, and even add icons/emojis. You can also type in the name of the field and Cognos will auto-complete it based on available fields from the model. Using Skip to content you skip the application toolbar and the navigation pane and go straight to the content in IBM Cognos Analytics. Using Skip to content helps in keyboard navigation because you don’t need to tab through the application toolbar and the navigation pane to reach your content. New Mobile App

Designed for smartphones, the new Analytics mobile application allows you to do things like pin favourite visualisations to a custom pin board and share them with other users in your organisation. Similar to Event Studio, it also lets you set up alerts to check for events that you determine, such as sales hitting a high or low number. Rounding out the new mobile features is the ability to use the AI Assistant to ask natural language questions (you can speak into your phone) and find related visualisations that you can pin or set alerts against.

Long Term Support

This version will be the final long-term support release (LTS) for the 11.1 build. That means by upgrading to this version, you will be supported for two-plus years with hot fixes and tech support. That also means 11.0 R13 (which was the LTS release for 11.0) is going to be out of support soon. 11.0.13 was released November 2018. If you are still on that version, it might be a good idea to start planning for your next upgrade.

Data Set Editor

In this latest release, IBM introduces the data set editor, which is essentially the reporting interface on top of a data set. Now, instead of creating a report for users to view, you stage data to be used as a source for other reports and dashboards. This means multiple pages, queries, joins and unions are all possible now. This functionality is a great way to address slow running reports that suffer from a database bottleneck.

New API’s

Cognos Analytics has 3 new REST API’s.

The first one allows you to create JSON end points to web services. Grab data like MLB stats or COVID-19 related information from web-based sources. The second API is focused on automation tasks and serves as an alternative to the old SOAP-based SDK. Expect to be able to modify things like capabilities, content, customisation’s, groups and roles using the new API.The final API is a dashboard JavaScript API that unlocks additional properties not available in the dashboard. It can automate changes and pass context to dashboards embedded within other applications.
