“Close to real-time reporting allows us to make instant decisions to improve the performance of our business”
Revolution Bars Group is a leading operator of premium bars with two strong brands, “Revolution” and “Revolución de Cuba”. They have a strong national presence across the UK and significant growth opportunities. They currently trade from an estate of 76 bars located predominantly in town or city centre high streets. The Group’s Revolution bars have been trading since 1996 and are a destination of choice for customers who value their focus on a premium drinks and food-led offering. The Group’s second brand, Revolución de Cuba, was established in June 2011 and has delivered strong returns on investment since inception.
To implement a powerful analytics solution that could help the company extract data from the EPOS systems at its bars and quickly generate accurate daily and weekly sales-margin reports.
Working closely with Tahola, Inventive Leisure implemented IBM Cognos software in conjunction with Tahola’s EposMart data mart software. Using the integrated solution, Inventive extracts critical sales and inventory data from its extensive network of POS systems and quickly transforms this information into revenue and sales reports which are automatically sent to decision-makers. This was previously not possible to do straight from the Epos system itself.
“Further into our implementation, we now have close to real- time reporting”, said Marc Dawson, (Previously, Head of IT). “We take a real-time feed from the tills, extracting data every 5 minutes. Cognos then automatically builds reports which are sent every 15 minutes to our Area Managers’ iPhones or iPads until 3am”. The reports contain a like-for-like summary for each establishment, showing each hour slot, this year vs last year and the variance. “This enables our managers to be incredibly agile and proactive” continues Dawson, “We are able to impact the performance of the business immediately by offering relevant promotions, up-selling and so on”.
Cognos also draws data from “The Hub” – an in-house designed system containing information on HR, training, site audits etc. Using this data, Revolution implemented an incentive scheme at a clerk level. Enabling them to put in targets and measure performance, incentivising staff to up-sell, drive individual promotions and directly impact the performance of the business. This is linked directly with The Hub for payroll information so that clerks will automatically be paid their incentives as a result of the till information. “This also give us close to real-time reporting at clerk level”, says Dawson. “We will be able to tell a clerk that they contributed xx sales last night and so far tonight they have done yy, showing them throughout the evening how close they are to their target and what they need to do to earn any incentive.”
Cognos is also heavily used at Revolution by the Marketing and Finance departments for ad hoc analysis and reporting. The Marketing team are able to gain valuable insight into customers and their behaviour in order to drive successful promotions and incentives.
“There’s no doubt that our BI solution is having a hugely positive impact on our business,” concludes Dawson.
